Northeastern men’s hockey (12-10, 7-7 HE) fell to the Merrimack College Warriors (11-12, 5-9 HE) 4-1 in the opening game of the weekend series Jan. 22.

Women’s hockey four-peat bid ends with loss to BU in Beanpot semifinals

The No. 6 Northeastern women’s hockey team (16-6, 12-1 HE) fell to the Boston University Terriers (7-11-3, 5-6-2 HE) 2-1 in a physical first-round Beanpot match. Just as last year’s semifinal game set an attendance record, this year’s saw the largest crowd at a women’s hockey game at Walter Brown Arena, with 2,281 attendees.

Men’s hockey defenseman Nolan Hayes announces departure

Trinity College announced the signing of Northeastern’s junior defenseman Nolan Hayes via an Instagram post Jan. 3. 
In the 2023-24 season, Hayes played in 24 games, but his time on the ice dipped his sophomore season, when he appeared in only five games. 
In his freshman campaign, the defenseman collected three assists and took 13 shots. He only had one shot the following season.
The Milton, Mass. native did not play with the Huskies this season and is not on the roster for the 2025-26 season....

Husky hockey player Anthony Messuri signs with Carolina ECHL affiliate

Senior forward Anthony Messuri signed with the Carolina Hurricanes’s ECHL affiliate, the Greensboro Argyles, the team announced Dec. 31. 
“I’m really excited,” Messuri said in a statement to the team. “Coach Burt did a great job welcoming me, and I just can’t wait to take the ice. It seems like a really good group of guys, and I’m super pumped to get going with the team.”

The end of an arena: Men’s hockey loses its final game in Matthews Arena

In a disappointing 4-3 loss, No. 11 Northeastern men’s hockey (10-6, 5-4 HE) conceded its final game in the historic Matthews Arena against the No. 20 Boston University Terriers (9-8-1, 6-5-0 HE).
This was the third game between the rivals this season but the first time the Terriers faced junior goaltender Lawton Zacher. The goaltender was out in the last two matchups due to injury and was replaced by sophomore goaltender Quentin Sigurdson.

TD Garden announced the dates for the 2026 Men’s and Women’s Beanpot Championship tournament in an Instagram post Dec. 8. 
On the women’s side, the semifinals will take place at Boston University Tuesday, Jan. 13. The Huskies will take on the Terriers at 7:30 p.m. 
The championship and consolation games at TD Garden will be Tuesday, Jan. 20. The third-place fight will begin at 4:30 p.m., and the battle for the title will be at 7:30 p.m.

The No. 12 Northeastern men’s hockey team (10-5, 5-3 HE) split the weekend with University of Massachusetts Amherst (9-9, 2-6 HE), winning 3-2 in overtime and losing 2-0 Dec. 6 and 7, respectively.

The No. 11 Northeastern men’s hockey team (9-4, 4-3 HE) defeated the Brown University Bears (3-7, 2-4 ECAC) 4-1 Nov. 29 on the team’s senior day and annual “Breaking Barriers” game.

Vinny Borgesi added to U.S. Collegiate Selects team roster

Senior defenseman and men’s hockey captain Vinny Borgesi was named to the U.S. Collegiate Selects team roster to compete for the 2025 Spengler Cup, the team announced Nov. 6. 
The captain will travel to Switzerland for the U.S. team’s face-off against Canada for the first round of the tournament, starting Dec. 26. The tournament will last six days, and each team will play between three and five games.

On Tuesday night, Brad Marchand and the Florida Panthers raised the Stanley Cup after defeating the Edmonton Oilers 5-1 in Game 6.

Before the game started, the former Bruins captain received a voicemail from his three children, his daughters, Rue and Sawyer and his stepson Sloane, wishing him luck in the game.

Patriots host high school flag football championship tournament

The New England Patriots Foundation hosted its third consecutive high school girls flag football championship tournament on June 12, inviting the top eight teams in the state to compete for the title.

Flag football is not recognized as an official sport by the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association, so organizations like the Patriots have established club leagues to help expand the sport. At the establishment of the association in 2023, there were eight teams. Now there are 51.

On Tuesday, Roman Anthony hit a double, bringing in two runners to help the Red Sox in a 3-1 win over the Tampa Bay Rays. After the game, Anthony answered questions about his family’s support of him, and the internet had a lot to say about the bunch.

Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, better known as “The Weeknd,” brought his “After Hours Til Dawn” tour to town Tuesday for the first of a two-night stand at Gillette Stadium.

Former Talking Heads frontman David Byrne will be bringing his new world tour to Boston for two nights in October.

Byrne announced his pending “Who is the Sky?” album on Tuesday. He will perform at the Boch Center Wang Theatre on Oct. 3 and 4. The album will be released on Sept. 5, but the first single, “Everybody Laughs,” is available now.

The Patriots announced that the 2025 Patriots Hall of Fame ceremony will take place on Saturday, September 20 at Patriot Place Plaza.

Triston Casas outlined his recovery timeline after season-ending injury

On Tuesday, Triston Casas answered questions regarding his season-ending injury and the timeline for his return.

“I’ve heard a different amount of months. I haven’t heard anything over a year though. So, as of right now, our goal is Opening Day next year,” said Casas.

Casas played 29 games before rupturing his patellar tendon on May 2. This is his second injury in two years as last season he only competed in 63 games due to torn cartilage in his ribcage.

On Monday, the PWHL released a video explaining how the league plans to build the rosters for its two new teams.

The PWHL Seattle and Vancouver franchises were announced as the two new expansion teams in late April, bringing the league up to eight teams.

Report: Jahlani Tavai had to leave practice early due to injury

On Monday, linebacker Jahlani Tavai had to leave practice early “after remaining down for an extended period of time,” reported ESPN NFL Nation reporter Mike Reiss.

Tavai went down during an 11-on-11 drill,  and during his time on the ground his teammates kneeled around him and the music was turned off.

Paul Rabil to be inducted into Pro Lacrosse Hall of Fame

Former Boston Cannons midfielder Paul Rabil was included in the 2025 Pro Lacrosse Hall of Fame class, the team posted on Wednesday.

Attacker Kevin Laveille and midfielders Joe Walters and Kyle Harrison were also honored in the 2025 class.

Rabil was the first pick in the Major Lacrosse League 2008 Draft by the Boston Cannons. In the league, he earned the MVP honors twice, was a seven-time All-Star and was Offensive Player of the Year three times.

On Thursday, U.S. men’s hockey will battle Finland in the quarterfinals of the 2025 International Ice Hockey Federation World Championship.

Recently, the PWHL released the list of players that have the opportunity to be selected at the league’s third draft on June 24.

The league, which began as six teams and is now expanding to eight, uses the Gold Plan to determine the order.

On Wednesday, the Patriots released their annual video announcement of the upcoming season’s schedule.

New England used the opportunity to start a competition between four players in the egg drop challenge.

Among the flurry of celebrities in attendance at the Celtics-Knicks game on Monday night, Patriots receiver Stefon Diggs and artist Cardi B made their presence known.

3 Bruins will represent Team USA at the IIHF World Championship tournament

On Friday, Team USA will play their first game of the 2025 International Ice Hockey Federation, or IIHF, World Championship tournament. On the roster, three Bruins will have the chance to play for their country.

Team USA will play the seven other countries in their group before having the chance to advance to the playoffs. These preliminary matches will be between May 9 and May 20.
